ATV Safety

Click to hear our ad: ATV SAFETY

Using an all terrain vehicle, called an ATV, is fun for kids and adults of all ages. However, an ATV is not a toy. It is heavy equipment capable of high speeds, and can be dangerous, especially for children. Before you ride an ATV, be mindful of these simple safety tips:

  • Get trained on the right way to safely ride the right-sized ATV for you.
  • Ride on designated trails at a safe speed. Never ride on paved roads except to cross, where permitted. ATVs are not designed to be operated on roads. They are difficult to control on paved surfaces.
  • Supervise younger riders. Michigan law requires adult supervision for a child under the age of 16 using an ATV.
  • Never ride an ATV after having consumed alcohol or other drugs
  • Never have a passenger on a single-rider ATV, or more than one passenger on an ATV designed for two people.
  • Always wear a helmet, googles, long sleeves, long pants, over the ankle boots and gloves.

Using common sense can make ATV riding safe for all. Find more about ATV safety at www.atvsafety.gov and www.atv-youth.org.
