 Motorcycles are an enjoyable and economical mode of travel for many. As the weather improves and motorcycle enthusiasts return to the roads and highways, both motor vehicle drivers and motorcyclists need to remember some important safety tips:

Motor vehicle drivers should:

• Be extra alert for motorcycles. They are easily overlooked. Pay particular close attention at intersections, where it is difficult to determine the speed of an approaching motorcycle.
• Check blind spots before turning, changing lanes or backing up.
• Share the road. Motorcycle operators have the same rights and duties on roads and highways as motor vehicle drivers. Motorcycles are entitled to a full lane of travel.
• Use caution when passing a motorcycle, and keep a safe distance. Passing too fast or too close can create a rush of air that throws the cyclist out of control. It can also throw road debris into the motorcycle or its path of travel.

Motorcyclists should:

• Be properly licensed to operate a motorcycle and remember to activate insurance coverage before putting the motorcycle back in service.
• Have your motorcycle in good operating condition, and check the air pressure in the tires after storing the motorcycle over the winter months.
• Always wear a helmet that fits properly, and utilize gloves and boots for added protection.
• Wear bright clothing and use the headlight to increase your visibility. Even though motorcycle has an automatically activated headlight, make sure it is operating when the motorcycle is started.
• Drive defensively, and assume the driver of a motor vehicle may not see you. Always be prepared to take evasive action.
• Ride near the center of the lane and stay out of the blind spot of other vehicles.
• When riding in groups, do not ride two abreast. Drive in a staggered formation to allow for evasive action in an emergency.
• Watch the road surface ahead to avoid dangerous roadway defects or debris.

Motorcyclists are vulnerable to injury because of the lack of protection that a motor vehicle provides to operators. Everyone needs to take the extra time to be safe, and be watchful.
