JULY 2009 -  Click to hear our ad:  Swimming Pool Safety

A swimming pool is a means to enjoy exercise or relax. Entertaining poolside makes for a fun time with family and friends. However, parents and those supervising young children must be mindful of the inherent risks of having access to a swimming pool. The following safety tips might prevent a drowning or a serious injury:

  • An adult should always be present when children are near a swimming pool. Supervision by an adult familiar with CPR is the best form of child safety.
  • Proper fencing with gate latches are a must around a swimming pool.
  • Doors that open into the swimming pool area should have an alarm that sounds when the door is opened.
  • If a child is missing, check the pool first. Seconds count.
  • Make sure that toys are cleared from the pool area, so that children aren’t tempted to reach for them.
  • Have life preservers available for young swimmers.
  • Lifesaving equipment and first aid supplies should be kept in the pool area.
  • Have an outside telephone handy for emergency calls.
  • If you hear thunder or see lightning, clear the pool.
  • Teach children not to play with or near drain covers.
  • Teach children how to swim; but remember that teaching a child to swim does not mean the child is safe in water.
